CREATION OF THE DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE POSITION: Early this year, John Negroponte was sworn in as the Director of National Intelligence, a new position created at the behest of the House-Senate 9-11 commission. The Director of National Intelligence coordinates all the elements of the intelligence community and, now that the Director of Central Intelligence only oversees the CIA, is the principle intelligence adviser to the president for issues of intelligence.
DEEP THROAT REVEALED: Deep Throat, the secret informant that led Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to uncover the Watergate scandal that led to NIxon's resigation, was revealed in 2005 to be Mark Felt. Felt was a major FBI top official and revealed his identity to Vanity Fair.
Iraq: -was under Ba'ath party from 1960s to 2003
-Saddam became president in 1979 until 2003
-In 2004 interim government took over. Interim prime minister: Iyad Allawi
-January 2005 Iraqis voted in an election which elected the Transitional Natioal Assembly (this was the big election that they said was a huge step for democracy)
-2005 they appointed President (Jalal Talabani, Kurdish); Prime Minister (Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, Shiiite); and one shiite (Adel Abdul Mehdi) and one sunni as vice presidents
-In fall 2005, Iraqis voted and accepted the new csonstitution. Really supported by shiites and kurdish but not by that many sunnis.

-happened when Iraq invaded Iran after disputes over who owned land between the two countries. Ceasefire in 1988.
-Iraq here used biological and chemical weapons
-U.S. gave Iraq arms
-was called the Persian Gulf War until the Kuwait war which became known as the Persian Gulf War instead
PERSIAN GULF WAR: -Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, war till 1991
-Iraq said Kuwait was illegally slant-drilling inside of Iraq
-this is when U.N. sanctioned Iraq, continued till about 2003 I think
-Kuwait had A LOT of countries on its side, including the United States and UN backing and mandate
-here is when Iraq fired missiles on Israel
-mostly happened because Iraq never accepted that Kuwait was its own country (used to be part of Iraq, divided up after WWI by Britain)
-this is when the whole depleted uranium left in Iraq thing started

-this is when the no-fly zones were started to protect the Shiites and the Kurds (Kurds in north, Shiites in south) who had tried to uprise and were consequently thrashed by the Iraqi government

TRENT LOTT: -senator from Mississippi
-former majority leader in Senate
-huge controversy over his statements at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party, in which he said that his state supported Thurmond in his bid for president (decades ago) and he was proud of it. This was controversial because Thurmond had run on a platform of racial segregation. This was interpreted to mean Lott supported segregation and once media latched onto this Lott was denounced by basically every big political leader there is
-because of all this, Lott resigned as republican majority leader
STROM THURMOND: -everyone knows him as the really really really old senator
-he was 100 while he was in the senate
-he died a couple years ago
-he was republican last I think. When he ran for president in 1948, he ran for the Dixiecrats, a party formed by breaking off of the Democrats because they wanted to maintain Jim Crows Laws and racial segregation
JIM JEFFORDS: -senator from Vermont
-known best because a few years ago he switched from being Republican to being Independent (he's the only independent now in the senate), changing it from 50-50 republican/democrats to 49-50 in favor of the democrats
HARRY REID: -Senate minority leader (democrat)

-shot and killed by London police who thought he was a suspect in the July 7 attacks in London
-later shown that he wasn't involved
-a leaked report said he was shot while being restrained
ABU MAZEN: -Abbas succeeded Yasir Arafat as president of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 2005 when Arafat died in late 2004.
-agreed with Sharon to a conditional-ceasfire soon after
-he was supposed to be responsible for controlling "militant groups" after the pull-out from Gaza this year
MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD: -elected president of Iran in 2005

Lewis "Scooter" Libby: Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, was indicted by a federal grand jury in October. He was charged with one count of obstruction of justice, two of perjury, and two of making false statements in connection with an investigation into who disclosed the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson. He resigned his post. Special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald spent two years investigating the leak.
