- Imperalism
- The takeingover of a country or territory by a stonger nation with the intent of dominating the politica,economic,and social life of the people of that nation.
- racism
- the idea that one race is superior to others.
- Social Darwinism
- The application of Charles Darwin's ideas about evolution and "survival of the fittest" to human societies-particularly as justification for imperialist expansion.
- Berlin Conference 1884-85
- 14 European nations met here to lay down rules for the division of Africa.
- Shaka
- A Zulu chief. He used highly disciplined warriors and good military organization to create a large centralized state.
- Boers
- Dutch settlers that came to the Cape of Good hope in 1652 to establish a way station for their ships sailing between the Dutch East Indies and home.
- Great Trek
- In the 1830s, to escape the Britsh, several thousand Beors began a move north.

- Based on the attitude, the Europeans developed this policy.

- A country or terriotory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power.

- An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges.

- Independent but less developed nations controlled by private business interests rather than by other governments.

- The adoption of a conqueror's culture by a conquered people.

- The adding of a region to the territory of an exsisting political unit.

- The Hawaiian ruler. In 1893 she called for a new constitution that would increase her power.
