- social movement
- behavior that breaks some norm in order to bring about social change; large group of people who are organized to promote or resist some social change
- resource mobilization theory
- mobilization, rational, skills/efficient, social movement orgazization; theory that social movements succeed or fail based on their ability to mobilize resources such as time, money, and people's skills
- political process theory
- collective action, what people do/tactics, engage in, "smart"
- collective behavior theory
- types of issues people get concerned about, problem, psychology; extraordinary activites carried out by groups of people including: lynchings, rumors, panices, urban legends, fads, fashions
- race
- physical, perceived differences in appearance; physical characteristics that distinguish one group from another
- ethnicity
- culture (values/norms, particular way of life), having distinctive cultural differences
- minority
- unequal, group who has more disadvantages when compared to another group; people who are singled out for unequal treatment and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination
- prejudice
- prejudging individuals based on their group; an attitude or prejudging usually in a negative way
- discrimination
- actions undertaken that treat people unequally on basis of their groups; an act of unfair treatment directed against an individual or group
- racism
- ranking/hierarchy of races that asserts that one race is superior to another; prejudice and discrimination on basis of race
- reservation
- a tract of land set aside for use by American Indians
- immigrant
- a person who comes to a country to take up permanant residence
- refugee
- a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution
- assimilation
- the process of being absorbed into the mainstream culture
- amalgamation
- action/process of merging into a single body/unite; think melting pot theory
- acculturation
- melting pot -- immigrants come from different countries and eventually they blend in; learning a culture
- pluralism
- the diffusion of power among many interest groups that prevents any single group from gaining control of the government
