- Faction
- Dissenting (rebel) groups. In France, the two factions were the Girondins and the Mountain.
- Elector
- Individuals who qualified to vote in an election. The electors had to have a certain property value.
- Coup D’état
- Sudden overthrow of a government. Napoleon led the coup d’état in France.
- Georges Danton
- The minister of justice of the Paris Commune. He and his followers wanted to kill all those who were in support of the King.
- Jean-Paul Marat
- published the radical journal, Friend of the People.
- Jacobins
- a large network of political groups that included the Girondins and the Mountain.
- Committee of Public Safety
- formed to counter the informal, foreign alliance against France’s rebels. Leaders included Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre.
- Maximilien Robespierre
- First led the Committee of Public Safety, and began the start of terror by killing all those with other views. Robespierre believed in having a Republic of Virtue. He took steps that included creating new schools to educate and abolishing slavery. Some of his more radical movements included the belief in dechristianization. This failed because most of France was Catholic. Robespierre became obsessed with the corruption of France and was guillotined on July 28, 1794.
- Reign of Terror
- set in motion by the Committee of Public Safety, this included massacring and guillotining anyone with opposite views then them. This was also an effort to defeat their foreign foes.
- Girondins and Mountain
- Two political factions. the Girondins were from the provinces and supported the King. The Mountain was from the city of Paris, and wanted death to the King.
