- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
- American physician and author who coined the tern "anesthesia" which literally means "without sensation or feeling": in 1843 wrote of the contagious nature of puerperal (chilbed) fever, and expressed the belief that it was carried by nurses and octors from patient to patient

- Austrian physician who established the true cause of puerperal fever, and required the doctors and medical students on his wards to wash their hands in chlorinated lime solution before examining patients
