- slumping
- the downslope movement of a block of rock or sediment along a curved slip surface.
- talus
- The fragments of rock that have fallen from a cliff or steep slope and accumulated at its base. Talus may form aprons and cones of blocky rubble.
- shear strength
- The internal resistance of a body of rock or sediment to shear and failure.
- Slump
- coherent blocks of rock or sediment slide on an upward-curved surface; also called a rotational landslide
- sackung
- A German term for deep-seated rock creep; involves complex internal deformation of a failing rock mass along multiple shear planes. Surface features of Sackung include ridge-top depressions, uphill facing scarps, and bulging of the lower part of the slope.
- Rock Fall
- individual rocks bound downwards or fall through the air
- sliding
- the downslope movement of a block of rock or sediment along a planar or curved slip plane. the block may remain nearly intact or may break up into fragments.
- driving forces
- A force that creates the downward-directed stress on a slope
- topple
- The pivoting of a rock mass about a point.
- subaqueous landslide
- A landslide that occurs on the floor of a lake or the sea.
- Debris slide/avalanche
- a type of rockslide in which the fragmented rock mass flows at very high velocities, commonly for long distances.
- Creep
- The slow downslope movement of soil, sediment, and highly fractured rock because of the force of gravity
- factor of safety
- The ratio of resisting driving forces on a slope. A slope with a factor of safety less than 1 may fail.
- mass wasting
- A comprehensive term for any type of downslope movement of rock or sediment
- earthflow
- a flow of wet, deformed soil and weathered rock.
- thaw flow slide
- a shallow, commonly fast moving landslide resulting from failure of the active layer in an area of permafrost
- Debris flow
- The rapid downslope movement of water saturaed sediment ranging in size from clay to boulders. Debris flows are triggered by heavy rain, rapid melting of snow and ice, or the sudden draining of a pond or lake.
- falling
- a type of landslide in which rock or sediment bounds and rolls down a steep slope.
- Colluvium
- The broken rock or sediment deposited by mass movement processes, including creep and landslides
- landslide
- The failure and downward and outward movement of a body of rock or sediment under the influence of gravity.
- flow
- A type of landslide in which material moves downslope in a ciscous fluid state; includes debris flows and mudflows.
- resisting forces
- A force that impedes the downslope movement of rock or sediment.
- Rockslide
- large blocks of bedrock slide on an inclined surface, typically bedding planes, foliation surfaces or joints
- complex (flow)
- a combination of two or more types of mass movement
