- public journalism
- newspaper takes active role in area on an issue-try to make readers care

- stories of a timely nature about events or conflicts that have just happened or are about to happen; what, why, and how it will effect people

- interpretation-explains significance of a news event, criticism or persuasion-good or bad features of a story that concerns and interests readers, appreciation-praises something successful, entertainment-develops things such as student life into humorous fashion, photo-told w/ pic. or set of pics., one punch-quick opinion on a topic

- a statement of title, ownership, editors, etc., of a newspaper or periodical.

correct-revise-significant because if you didn't do them in order, or just not do them, you could get some facts wrong and possibly be sued for libel, etc.
- headline
- used to describe what the story is about-largest font, usually bold.
- Essay
- the media has shown not only in-dept coverage of the towers standing for their last few moments and the pentagon being hit, but also of most memorials and prayer services-ex: hbo specials, nbc specials, etc.
- pull quote
- a good quote broken out of the story, placed in larger type and used as a point of entry to entice the reader.
- cut line
- tells a mini-story-line under photo that tells what it's about (caption)
- feature story
- inform and instruct but their primary purpose is to entertain-still factual and relate to news.
- indirect quotes
- paraphrase a quote you got-don't use exact words
- soft news
- news that entertains or informs, with an emphasis on human interest and novelty and less immediacy than hard news.
- direct quotes
- using exact words a person gave you
- lead
- the beginning of the story, the hook that tells the reader what the story is about.
- lettor to the editor
- your opinion about a story-not as long as regular stories-you're not solicited to write one
- byline
- line which tells the reader who wrote the story.
- commentary
- your opinion on a certain topic-you're asked or solicited to write one
- nut graph
- sentence or paragraph that states the focus of the story-should tell what the story is about and why it is newsworthy.
- news
- something important that affects people; it's timely, factual, and goes out to a certain group of people
- editorial
- newspaper or magazine article that gives the opinions of the editors or publishers
- photo credit
- name next to a picture which tells the reader who took it.
