Pro-Family Leaders Call On Congress to Curb Judicial Activism, Filibusters
Phyllis Schlafly is leading a filibuster on federal courts, pro-family issues, and the exercising of religion in courts. She wants the Constitutional Restoration Act to be reinstated so that Congress does not have as much power over religious matters in court.

Filibusters
The use of Filibusters in Congress has been called into question, partly for religious toleration reasoning. Some are trying to oppose filibusters by using the reasoning behind what a democracy really is.

Frist defends efforts to end judicial filibusters
"In his remarks, Frist noted that some Republicans are opposed to ending judicial filibusters, fearing that they may someday want to use the same tactics against appointments made by a Democratic president."

No compromise in filibuster fight
" 'It's unprecedented, the steps they've gone to to prevent highly qualified judges from receiving simply an up or down vote on the floor of the United States Senate,' he said.

Frist and Reid both acknowledged that they are constantly negotiating, trying to find a solution where the Senate does not have a showdown over whether Republicans will change the parliamentary rules to ban judicial filibusters."

A ban on TV indecency is all the rage in the U.S. - is censorship next?
"With a four-letter word here and a "wardrobe malfunction" there, surely someone in power - the executives, the stars, the creators? - deserves a good thrashing. Viewers may not agree on what indecency is or how to fix it. But they want someone to answer for TV's sins."

"A less draconian proposal would expand the purview of the Federal Communications Commission beyond over-the-air broadcasting to add cable and satellite programming - which would place shows from such networks as MTV, FX and even HBO (with its F-word-riddled dramas) under the thumb of the feds."
www.usatoday.com

The mess of mass entertainment
"In part, the prevailing confusion about where we stand in the struggle over pop culture indecency reflects the limited focus of recent efforts to "clean up" mass entertainment. While concentrating on a few high-profile events on TV, activists and officials have done little to address the omnipresent edginess and raunch on cable TV, in the music business or in video games. While attempts to expand FCC supervision into these arenas would prove unpopular, impractical and ill-advised, a meaningful extension and adjustment of content ratings could equip parents with information to enhance empowerment."

Frist rejects filibuster compromise
"Reid also called for giving senators more power over appointment of judges from their state as well as the creation of a task force, made up of former senators, to recommend improvements in the confirmation process.

But Frist, earlier in the day, said he would not accept any deal that keeps his Republican majority from confirming judicial nominees that the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved. "

What's behind the Senate dispute over judicial filibuster
have any other filibusters been had on judicial nominees?

"Republicans say filibusters have never been successfully used to block judicial nominees from confirmation who had majority support.

Democrats point to Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas, who was blocked from becoming chief justice in what the Senate historian's Web site calls "the first filibuster in Senate history on a Supreme Court nomination." The attempt to force a vote on his nomination drew fewer than 50 votes.

They also say at least two of Clinton's lower court judicial nominees were filibustered for years by Republicans, although they were ultimately confirmed."

Hagel calls for filibuster solution
"But he noted that Republicans prevented votes on many of President Clinton's choices for the federal bench.

"The Republicans' hands aren't clean on this either. What we did with Bill Clinton's nominees -- about 62 of them -- we just didn't give them votes in committee or we didn't bring them up," Hagel said."

Miami opens series with 105-86 win over Washington
"The Heat's depth was a key factor, with Miami's reserves outscoring Washington's 36-5.

Mavs rip Rockets by 40 in Game 7, reach Round 2
"The Dallas Mavericks were merely looking for a good game on both ends of the court. What they got was the most lopsided Game 7 victory in NBA playoff history.

And take note, Phoenix: They did it despite Dirk Nowitzki still misfiring."

Boston massacre
Pacers pound Celtics 97-70 to win first-round series
"The Game 7 rout was so complete that Boston coach Doc Rivers began clearing his bench with 4:32 left. And Larry Bird, the former Celtics great and now the Pacers president of basketball operations, left his seat behind the Indiana bench with 3:31 to go.

"I don't know if the leprechauns took the day off," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "All I know is we had No. 33 sitting on our side of the building. I've got to believe that makes a little difference when you're here for a Game 7." "

Spurs-Sonics Breakdown
Seattle finally hits a brick wall in Duncan, Spurs D
"They have the gunners to shoot over the Spurs, and nobody expects them to win, so they can play loose. With Allen, Lewis, Radmanovic, Antonio Daniels and Luke Ridnour, the Sonics boast five marksman to neutralize the Spurs' tall interior defenders. With little pressure to win the series, they should let it fly. Defensively, Seattle has active big bodies in James, Danny Fortson, Reggie Evans and Nick Collison to throw at Duncan. They will bang him, bump him and "Bowen" him while using all 24 fouls..."

Chesty ads built buzz, but also animosity
"Paul Cappelli, CEO of The Ad Store, cheerfully admits he used sex appeal to "stand out" in the Super Bowl. But he says critics such as Mars "don't get it" when it comes to his ad and what it tried to say about the Jackson incident.

"What's wrong with a woman showing her body on TV? The real sin of last year is what the authorities, almost all men, did to a woman who bared her breast. Janet Jackson was pilloried for nothing. That was the most anti-feminist thing in decades."

GoDaddy's ads, the game spot and another with the same woman, scored one of this year's top ratings in Ad Track, USA TODAY's weekly consumer poll. Overall, 28% like the ads "a lot," topping the 21% average. Men drove the score: 37% gave them the top rating vs. 15% of women. "
