Bluegrass Music
Bill Monroe developed this type of music in the 1940s. A band of this type usually features harmony singing, a banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass, and fiddle. It had a regional influence, originating in the area of eastern Tennessee and Kentucky.
The Nashville Sound
This music dominated country music in the latter part of the 1950s and 1960s. It had a smoother sound and used background singers. Some famous artists of this style of country music were Eddy Arnold and Patsy Cline.
Jazz Music
This music originated in the United States in the late 1800s and is sometimes referred to as the only art form to originate in the U. S. It is a combination of the influence of African and Western music and the blues.
Ragtime Music
The origin of this music can be traced to the area of St. Louis, Mo. in the late 1800s. Its popularity extended to the early 1920s.
Folk Music
This music became very popular during the 1950s and 1960s. Many of these songs reflected the revival of traditional folk songs such as those composed by Woody Guthrie. Other artists wrote songs about social unrest or protests about the government.
Honky Tonk Music
This style of country music began in the 1940s in Texas and Alabama. It was played most often in bars and night clubs frequented by the working class people. Hank Williams was one of the most famous singers of this type of music.
Country Swing Music
This music developed in the 1920s and 1930s in Oklahoma and Texas. One of the leading singers of this music was Bob Wills.
Blues Music
This music began in the U. S. in the 1800s and became famous and popular in the 1900s.
Rapping
Hip-hop music involves that which is rhythm and poetry and the mixing of sounds.
Country Music
This music originated in the 1800s in the Southern region of the U. S. It is presented with both vocalists and instrumentalists. Most of these bands use stringed instruments such as the guitar, fiddle, or banjo.
Popular (Pop) Music
This type of music refers to music that is played and enjoyed by people of any current time period and is created to sell to the general public. It differs from classical and folk music mainly by current commercial value.
Rockabilly Music
This music began in the 1950s in Tennessee. It combined the elements of rock and roll music with country and rhythm and blues. Johnny Cash began his career singing this type of music.
Rhythm and Blues Music
This was a popular black music tradition that began in the 1940s. Originally it was a combination of jazz and the blues. The musicians performing this music use electronic instruments, unlike traditiional blues performers.
Field Hollers
The musical roots of the blues were spoken or sung shouts between slaves working in the fields and were spititual and work songs of African Americans.
W. C. Handy
This man wrote "Memphis Blues" in 1912 and "Saint Louis Blues" in 1914.
Cowboy Music
This music was popular in the 1930s and 1940s, especially in Hollywood movies. Some of the leading singers of this music were Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Tex Ritter.
Improvisation
This is music that musicians create as they play.
The Jazz Age
The influence of this music was important in the 1920s.
Cajun Music
This music originated in the late 19th and 20th centuries in Louisiana. It reflects the culture of the French speaking people who came to Louisiana from Canada. The accordian and fiddle make up the two basic instruments of this kind of band.
Latino Music
This music came from both Central and South America. Its origins can be traced to the Spanish and Portuguese who established colonies in the New World.
Scott Joplin
This man was one of the most important ragtime composers. He wrote the "Maple Leaf Rag" in 1899.
Rock Music
This music began in the early 1950s in the United States and had its roots in the electric guitar music of the rhythm and blues and the blues of the 1940s. Elvis Presley became a major star of this type of music, as were the Beatles.
Hip-hop and Rap Music
This music is also referred to as rap music. It began in New York City in the 1970s by mainly Latino and African youth.
