- Name some trees that are suceptable to anthracnose.
- Sycamore, flowering dogwood, white oak and maple
- List the symptoms of fungal leaf disease
- Wilt, leaf spots, blisters, leaf curl, mildew, sooty mold, rust
- Why is dogwood anthracnose so distructive to flowerring dogwood?
- Its an exotic pathogen and the native flowering dogwood has no resistance to it.
- Where would you look for symptoms of dogwood anthracnose on flowering dogwood?
- On the leaves. Look for a spot with a grey or brown center with a purplish margin. Leaves with old infections will have holes.
- What is the role of epicormic shoots in flowering dogwood infected with dogwood anthracnose?
- These shoots are formed when the plant is under stress. They form along the main shoots and trunk of the tree. The amin branches and trunk can become infected resulting in the girdling of the tree.
- What is it about the anthracnose that kills the tree?
- The fungus forms cankers that can eventually girdle the tree...Not killed by the leaf spot
- Is the powdery mildew an obligate or facultative pathogen?
- Obligate
- What causes sooty mold on leaves?
- The sooty mold saprophytic fungi growing on insect honeydew.
- Why are powdery mildews so easy to control with basic fungicides, soaps, biocontrol fungi, and non-pesticide chemicals?
- Powdery mildew does not penetrate the plant, instead it lives on the surface of the plant.
- What is a practical method to treat tar fungus on the leaves of trees and garden plants?
- Clear away all dead plant material that have the spots and/or burn the material. This removes the source of the spores.
