- Ecosystem
- An array of species and their physical environment.
- Trophic level
- All organisms the same number of transfer steps away from the energy input into an ecosystem.
- Food Chain
- A linear flow of energy captured by primary producers (autotrophs) into ever higher trophic levels of an ecosystem.
- Food web
- Cross-connecting food chains.
- Biological magnification
- Some substance becomes more concentrated in body tissues as it moves up through food chains.
- Biomass/Energy Pyramid

Primary producers trap about 1% of the solar energy that enters an ecosystem

At each trophic level, the bulk of the energy received from the previous level is used in metabolism

- Water Cycle
- Region from which water drains into a single stream or river.
- Aquifer
- Underground layer of rock that contains water (groundwater)
- Salinization
- Salt buildup in soil through poor drainage, evaporation, and heavy irrigation.
- Carbon cycle
- Movement of carbon from the atmosphere, through food webs and ocean’s waters and rocks, and back to atmosphere.
- Greenhouse effect
- Warming of the lower atmosphere as greenhouse gases reradiate heat energy back toward the Earth’s surface.
- Global Warming
- Long-term rise in the temperature of the Earth’s lower atmosphere.
