copy deck
- heredity
- the passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring
- phenotype
- an organism's appearance or other detectable characteristic
- gene
- one set of instuctions for an inherited trait
- recessive trait
- a trait rhat reappears in the second generation after disappearing in the first generation when parents with different traits are bred
- allele
- one of the alternative forms of a gene that governs a characteristic, such as hair color
- cross-pollinating
- pollen from one plant fertilizes the ovule of a flower on a different plant
- dominant trait
- the trait observed in the first generation when both parents that have different traits are bred
- genotype
- the entire genetic makeup of an organism; also the combination of genes for one or more specific traits
- true breeding
- self pollenation when all of the plants offspring will have the same trait as the parent
- self-pollinating
- a plant has both male and female reproductive structures, so pollen from one flower can fertilize the ovule of the same flower
- incomplete dominance
- when each allele has its own degee of influence on the offspring
- meiosis
- the copying process that produces cells with half the usual number of chromosomes
