- Alliteration

- A few lines spoken directly to the audience
- Assonance
- Repetition of vowel sounds within literally

- Language that appeals to the five senses, usually to paint a visual picture. May be made up of other poetic terms, such as simile, metaphor, or personification
- Dramatic Irony
- The audience knows something the characters don't
- Verbal Irony
- Also known as sarcasm; saying one thing but meaning something different
- Situational Irony
- The opposite of what we expect occurs
- Metaphor
- A comparison of two dissimilar things; one thing is said to be another
- Onomatopaeia
- The sound of the word imitates the original sound
- Oxymoron
- Contadictory or opposite terms intentionally paired together
- Personification
- giving human characteristics to inanimate objects
- Pun
- A play on words; A word is used which has two meanings at the same time, which results in humor.
- Repetition
- A word or phrase is repeated at the beginning of stanzas or lines
- Rhyme Scheme
- Words at line ends rhyme.
- Simile
- A comparision in which two things are said to be like or as one another.
- Soliliquy
- A long spech, usually spoken to oneself.
