copy deck
- identity property
- In addition when you add zero to a number it doesn't change and in multiplication its when you multiply a number by one and it doesn't change
- real number
- The set of all rational and irrational numbers
- variable
- A letter or symbol used to represent one or more numbers
- term
- A number, variable or product of them
- rational number
- A number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers, but b is not equal to 0
- inverse property
- In additon when you add the opposite and get zero and in multiplication when you multiply by the reciprocal and get one
- base
- The number or variable which will receive and exponent.
- coefficient
- The number in from of a variable in a term. If none is seen it is assumed to be 1.
- associative property
- The grouping of addition or multiplication of numbers can be changed and does not change the result
- exponentiation
- Raising a term to a power
- distrubitive property
- When you multiply an Algebraic expression in a quantity by the term outside
- constant terms
- Numbers with no variable parts.
- graph
- The point on a number line that corresponds to a real number
- like terms
- Terms that have the same variable(s) and power(s)
- exponent
- The number that represents the number of times the base is used as a factor
- equivalent
- When two algebraic expressions have the same values for all of their variable(s)
- reciprocal
- a nonzero number written as a fraction and flipped whose product with the original is one, also called multiplicative inverse
- coordinate
- The number that corresponds to the point on the number line
- opposite
- Numbers that are equal distance form zero whose sum is zero, also called additive inverse
- evaluate
- To substitute in given value(s) for variable(s) and then following order of operations to simplify
- order of operations
- The order of simplifying an expression: grouping symbols from the inside out, powers and roots as they occur left to right, multiplication and division as they occur left to right and finally addition and subtraction as they occur to right
- commutative property
- The order of the addition or multiplication of two numbers can be moved and does not change the result
- simplify
- Following order of operations
- numerical expression
- Consists of numbers, operations, and may contain grouping symbols
- closure property
- A set of numbers which when an operation is preformed on them the answer is also in the original set of numbers
- irrational numbers
- Numbers that cannot be expressed in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b=0
- power
- The base written with its exponent
- natural number
- The set of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, ... Also called counting numbers.
