Indo-Europeans
a group of people who speak an Indo-European language suh as Armenina, Estonina, etc.Indo-Europeans invaded westward from the steppes of Russia and Ukraine, Armenians being some of the first.
Eurasia
the name some geographers think should be given to the of Europe and Asia. Other geographers contend that the areas should continue to be separated by the Ural Mountains. The ones that believe in EURASIA say that since they both follow a general geographic pattern, that it should be called Eurasia.
inland sea
a sea that is almost completely surrounded by land. The Balck Sea is a large inland sea that lies west of Bulgaria and Romania and houses several very successful beach resorts along its coast.
tundra
an ecosystem in arctic areas with treeless plains and where short grass and mossess grow. The tundra lies in the land touching the Arctic Ocean in Russia.
taiga
an arctic type ecosystem with coniferous forests and is found in the regions south of the tundras. There are many taiga regions in Russia due to how far north it reaches.
steppe
an ecosystem of Europe and Asia with temperate grasslands. Steppes are very similar to prairies excpet for prairies have tall grassess and stppes have short grasses.
multiethnic
composed of many ethnic groups. The geography of Central Europe is very open with few barriers such as large mountain ranges and wide oceans. This has made migration easy and given many different ethnic groups an opportunity to grow and prosper in different parts of this region. As a result, many countries of Central Europe are MULTIETHNIC.
ethnic group
people who share such things as culture, language, and religion. The area covered by Central Europe and Northern Eurasia is home to dozens and dozens of ETHNIC GROUPS. One of these groups is called the Estonians.
acid rain
rain whose high concentration of chemicals, usually from industrial pollution, pollutes water, kills plant and animal life, and eats away at the surface of stone and rock; a form of chemical weathering. Much of the industrial activities in Central Europe and Northern Eurasia has led to frequent ACID RAINfalls.
Infant mortality
the number of children out of 1,000 who die within the first year of life. The medical care Poland is free for most people so the quality of living very high. This brings the level of INFANT MORTALITY.
Maternal mortality
the number of women who die due to pregnancy and childbirth complications out of 100,000. MATERNAL MORTALITY is very low in Poland, due to almost free medical care—it is only .019%!
Life expectancy
the expected length of an individual’s life as determined by statistics. LIFE EXPECTANCY is fairly high in Poland thanks to a medical care system in which it is free for almost everybody.
