- climate
- the average weather and precipitation in an area over an extended period of time
- desert
- an area that receives less than 25 cm of rainfall in an entire year. Examples: Western North America, Central Australia, Western Asia.
- grassland (savanna)
- receives 25 to 75 cm of rainfall a year. Vegetation like the acacia tree grow here. Examples: Africa, Midwestern North America, Australian Coasts.
- deciduous
- more southern than coniferous, and contain a wide variety of vegetation, such as oaks, maples, ferns. Example: Eastern border of US and Canada, Europe, and Eastern Asia.
- tundra
- a cold desert
- tropical rainforest
- even more south than deciduous forests, and contain more of a variety of plants than any other biome. Example: most forests along the equator.
- freshwater
- a water biome that consists of still and moving water and contains freshwater plants and fish. Example: most lakes, rivers, and streams
- coniferous
- the northernmost forests on earth, and exist mainly of coniferous trees, such as pines and spruces- trees with cones. Also, animals like elk or moose also live there. Example: Alaska and parts of the Rockies.
- biome
- an area with a similar climate, plant life, and animal life
- permafrost
- a permanent layer of frozen soil
- marine
- a water biome that covers 70% of the earth and consists of salty water. Example: the ocean
