OSHA
Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The agency of the US Dept of Labor that establishes rules and standards to protect the safety of employees in the workplace.
Restricted Area
The area of the operating room where only personnel wearing surgical attire, including masks, shoe coverings, and head coverings are allowed. Doors are kept closed, and the air pressure is greatere than that in areas outside the restricted area. Entry into this are requires the highest level of precautions against contamination.
Semirestricted Area
A designated area in which only personnel wearing scrub suits and hair caps that enclose all facial hair are allowed.
The Joint Commission
The accrediting organization for hospitals and other health care facilities in the US.
Transitional Area
An area in which surgical personnel or visitors prepare to enter the semirestricted and restricted areas. Transitional area include the locker room and changing rooms.
Unrestricted Area
An area that people dressed in street clothes may enter.
Temperature at which operating room is maintained
68 - 73 F (20 - 23 C)
Humidity
50 - 55% (Humidity is controled to reduce the risk of infection and to minimize static electricity. When humidity is low, static electricity can create a fire hazard in the presence of flammable solutions and oxygens. High humidity may increase the risk of mold and bacterial growth.

Biomedical technologists (biomedical engineers)
Are required to maintain the safety and operating condition of many of the hospital's medical devices, including those used in surgery.
Maintenance Department
Responsible for environmental systems in thhe hospital, including the hospital's power source (regular and emergency), ventilation, in-line gases, suction, electricity, water, light, heat, cooling and humidity control.
Environmental Services
Personnel perform essential cleaning and decontamination services for all departments of the hospital.
Satellite Facilities
Operated by larger hospitals or medical centers, i rural or urban areas away from the central facility. These facilities deliver various types of care or treatment to patients. Services may include, but are not limited to ambulatory surgery centers, clinics, urgent care centers, laboratory and radiology centers, physicians' office, extended care centers and rehabilitation facilities. (Does not need to be accreditated to operate - accreditation is voluntary.)
Accreditation
(as it refers to health care facilities) The process by whichh a team of professionals evaluates a health care institution's practices and policies and the outcomes of patient care.
Health Care Policy
The purpose of any policy is to create a standard that protects the patient, hospital personnel, and public from harm. Health care policies are formed with this goal in mind. Some are mandated by law, others by practice evaluataion and outcome.
