Test
Putting a product through actual use to discover problems with a design.
Motor Load Gearing
Determining drivetrain gearing based on maximum motor load.
Four-Bar Linkage
A closed loop linkage system that can provide a wide variety of motion types. The most basic type of four-bar linkage is one where the links are equal length and parallel to each other.
Speed
The time-rate of doing work, measured in watts or less frequently horsepower.
Arcade Style Drive
A one-joystick robot drive code that utilizes the x and y axes for locomotion, allowing the operator to operate a robot drive system much like a one joystick arcade/video game.
Friction Grabber (Gripper)
An Object Manipulator that utilizes friction to grab, hold, and manipulate objects and/or performs tasks.
Bogey Wheel
One of a number of modern tank-tread double-wheels used as an Idler/Tension Wheel.
Linkage
A linkage is designed to convert some input motion into a different output motion. It typically consists of a series of rigid links. Each link has one or more joints that rotate freely connecting the links together. Typically one link is fixed and cannot move and one link is driven in some input motion.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Directs a robot's behavior autonomously, through human instructions, or from a combination thereof. It must also be able to receive input from sensors that provide information on its position and environment.
Kinetic Friction
The frictional force which opposes the motion of an object WHILE it is moving.
Force
Accelerations are caused by forces. For example, when a robot is accelerating it does so because of the force its wheels exert on the floor.
Acceleration
A change in speed over time.
Coefficient of Friction
The ratio of maximum frictional force between two surfaces to the force holding them together. Term used to describe the "grippyness" of two surfaces meshing together. Slippery objects have a very low Coefficient of Friction.
Degree of Freedom
The ability to move in a single independent direction of motion. To be able to move in multiple directions means to have multiple degrees of freedom. Moving up & down is one degree of freedom, moving right & left is another, something which can move up/down and right/left has TWO degrees of freedom.
Skid Steer
Another name for "tank drive" consisting of two independent sets of powered wheels (or treads), one on each side of its chassis.
Stall Torque
A motor's maximum torque; The torque at which a motor stalls.
Bevel Gears
Gears where the axes of the two shafts intersect and the tooth-bearing faces of the gears themselves are conically shaped. Bevel gears are most often mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees apart, but can be designed to work at other angles as well.
Receiver
A device that passes signals from the Transmitter to the Microcontroller for interpretation.
Wheel Base
Distance between the center of front and rear wheels of a robot or other vehicle.
Brainstorming
A group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution to a problem.
Accumulator
A robot mechanism designed to pick up a large number of similar objects.
Gear Reduction
Involves using gears/sprockets/pulleys of two different sizes to work together, usually slowing output speed and increasing torque. Desired gear reductions can be accomplished in one or multiple stages.
(Turning Scrub)
In a Skid Steer Drivetrain, the frictional force between the wheels and the ground when a wheel or wheels slide(s) across the surface in order for the robot to turn.
Twisting Joint
A joint in which the axis of rotation is parallel to the robot arm. Twisting the human wrist illustrates this degree of freedom.
Direct Current (DC)
An electric current flowing in one direction only.
Gearbox
The simplest form of a transmission. Uses multiple gears to alter motor speed to achieve desired output.
Systems Integration
Refers to the act of combining several smaller subsystems into one overall system (ex/ a fully functioning robot) while ensuring all the component parts function effectively together.
Transmission
Mechanism by which power is transmitted from a power source to the wheels of a robot or other vehicle.
Normal Force
The amount of force holding two surfaces together. For an object sitting on a level surface, this value is equivalent to the objects weight (as caused by gravity).
Tread
One of a series of connected components that make up a track.
Gear
One of a set of toothed wheels that work together to alter the relation between the speed of a driving mechanism and the speed of the driven parts
Center of Rotation
The point that a robot turns around, frequently variable, and dependant upon associated forces, torques, and frictions.
Compression
The reduction in volume (causing an increase in pressure) of an object.
Robot
A programmable, mechanical device that can perform tasks and interact with its environment.
Idler (Tension Wheel)
Component that transmits no power but guides or tensions a track, belt, or rope.
Differential
A device that splits the supplied torque two ways, allowing each output to spin at a different speed. Used frequently with drive trains that steer to allow for easier/more uniform turning.
Rotating Joint
A joint in which the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the robot arm. The human elbow illustrates this degree of freedom.
Elasticity
Property enabling some objects/systems to overcome deformation and regain original shape and size when externally applied balanced forces are removed.
DC Motor
An electric rotating machine energized by direct current and used to convert electric energy to mechanical energy.
Work
Torque is the application of force where there is rotational motion.
Sliding Joint
A joint in which the axis of motion is linear.
Friction
The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Tank Tread Drive
A drivetrain which utilizes a continuous Track as a drive member; this track is driven by one or more drive sprockets.
Wheel Speed
How fast the robot wheel(s) is(are) spinning. Used to calculate how fast the robot moves across the floor.
Conveyance
Something that carries the objects from the intake up into a storage chamber.
RPM
Revolutions Per Minute
Sprocket
Any of various tooth-like projections arranged on a wheel rim to engage the links of a chain.
Static Friction
The frictional force which opposes the motion of an object BEFORE it starts moving.
Microcontroller
Uses logic (programming software) to receive commands and interpret signals from the Transmitter and/or sensors that control a robot's movement and functions.
Intake
Entrance area of an Accumulator for robotic object gathering.
Plow
An Object Manipulator that applies force to the side of an object to push it.
Switch
A mechanical device used to make or break connections within an electrical circuit.
Tank Style Drive
A two-joystick robot drive code that typically utilizes the y-axis (up and down) only for locomotion. Each joystick controls a single side of the robot drive system.
Spur Gears
Spur gears are the simplest and most common type of gear. Their general form is a cylinder or disk
Default Code
Factory/initial control program code loaded into the VEX (or other) Microcontroller.
Power
Energy that is produced by mechanical, electrical, or other means and used to operate a device. OR
Worm Drive
is a setup consisting of a Worm Gear and a Worm Wheel meshing together. The Worm Gear resembles a screw, and is the driving gear in this setup. The Worm Wheel is similar to a Spur Gear, except that all its teeth are slightly curved so it meshes more effectively with the Worm Gear.
Traction
The friction between a drive member (wheel) and the surface it moves upon. The amount of force a wheel can apply to a surface before it slips.
Geartrain (Powertrain)
Represents the part of the Drivetrain which transmits power from the Motor to the ground.
Rack Gears
Flat bars with straight gear teeth. They can be combined with Spur Gears commonly referred to as Pinions
Tele-Operated
Describes a robotic system that in human controlled.
Autonomous
Describes a robotic system that carries out programs or performs tasks without outside control by acquiring, processing and acting on environmental information.
Subsystem
A type or component or set of components that make up part of a whole.
Turning Torque
Torque created by the force of driven wheels to the ground or surface. This torque must be greater than the Scrub Torque in order for a robot to turn.
Transmitter
Primary input device utilized for tele-operation of a VEX (or other) robot.
Object Manipulator
A mechanism specifically designed to interact with objects in the robot's (or other vehicle's) environment.
Roller Claw
A specific type of Friction Grabber that rolls the object into its claw by use of a powered wheel or roller.
Track
A series of connected treads, drive sprocket(s), idler(s)/tension wheels(s), and sometimes support rollers and suspension components when necessary.
Hard Stop
A point at which a mechanical system cannot go any further because it has hit a fixed limit.
Shock Load
An instantaneous spike of loading on a mechanical system
Torque
Measure of how fast an object is moving, that is how much distance it will travel over a given time.
Control System
A program that tells the robot how to act in different circumstances and the electronics that process the information. This programming can be very simple or extraordinarily complex, but it is designed to allow the machine to react to its environment through code or sensory input (touch, temperature, and light sensors).
Chain
A connected flexible series of links used for fastening or securing objects and pulling or supporting loads.
Gear Ratio
(in a gearbox, transmission, etc.) the ratio between the rates at which the last and first gears rotate.
Scoop
An Object Manipulator that utilizes gravity to lift up an object from beneath.
Prototype
A full-scale working model of a product frequently used for testing.
