1970 Clean Air Act (CAA)
* Identified 6 criteria pollutants (CO, O3, SO2, NO2, Pb, particulates) and set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS)

* 1990 amendment addressed acid rain, ground-level ozone, stratospheric ozone depletion, and air toxics
2004 Clean Air Rules
* Interstate Air Rule - Cap and trade system to reduce drifting pollutants

* Mercury Rule - reduce Hg emissions from coal-fired power plants

* Nonroad Diesel Rule - remove emissions from diesel engines (e.g. construction vehicles) remove sulfur from diesel fuel

* Ozone and Fine Particles Rules - requires non-compliance regions to submit plans for reduction of O3 and PM2.5
1987 Montreal Protocol
* Approximately 150 nations in agreement to phase out production of CFCs (ozone-depleting compounds) by 2005
1997 Kyoto Protocol
* Industrialized nations in agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 5% below 1990 levels by 2012

* Lacey Act (first passed in 1900) - currently protects endangered fish and wildlife from illegal import and export, and restricts entry into the U.S. of non-native species

* 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) - restricted international commerce in plant and animal species believed to be harmed by trade
1969 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
* Establishes the Council on Environmental Quality

* Requires all federal agencies to assess the environmental impact of major federal actions significantly affecting the environment, and submit environmental impact statements (EISs) to the Office of Federal Activities in EPA
1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)
* Gives EPA the ability to track (and ban) the 75,000 industrial chemicals currently produced, developed, or imported into the United States
1964 Wilderness Act
* Designated land parcels within National Wildlife Refuges and National Parks to be transferred to the newly-established National Wilderness Preservation System, thereby protected from roads, construction, motorized vehicles, and commercial activity
1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act
(amended 1977 as Clean Water Act)
* Established basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into U.S. waters
1974 Safe Drinking Water Act
* Applies to all waters potentially designed for drinking use, above or below ground
1987 Water Quality Act
* Established national policy to control non-point sources of water pollution

* Emphasized development of state management plans to control non-point source pollution
1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
