- Not qualitatively different from others. Often emerge from other religions. Identified when they deviate from society so much that they are considered a different community.

- Dissatisfaction with what already exists whether religiously, socially, or politically.

- Established by Mary Baker Eddy, who was sick all the time. She determined that the body is an illusion and disease does not exist.

- 39 people committed mass suicide because they believed a UFO was coming to Earth and the only way they could reach the spaceship would be to leave their bodies behind.
- What is UFO religion?
- Groups of people who take an interest in science fiction to an extreme level. Motivated by fear that we will destroy ourselves and only a \"divine\" force can save us.

- Religion created in response to race, segregation movement. Only white people can be God\'s followers.
- About Nation of Islam?
- Religion created in response to race, segregation movement. Only dark-skinned people can follow God.

- 98%. Most go out of existence quickly.

- Adaptation to society (Mormons abolishing polytheism) and moderate tension (Shakers had too much tension as they were totally celibate and they all died out).

- L. Ron Hubbard is the founder. 1950, he wrote a book called Dianetics which discusses the ability of humans to control their own mind by destroying old memories, even those from previous lives. 1954- it becomes a religion.
- Scientology: What was L. Ron Hubbard\'s theory?
- There was a fear of atomic bombs at this time. L Ron Hubbard thought that people were born with traumatic memories which lead to engrams that cause people to act irrationally. By auditing and interviewing people, they deal with these traumas and accept them.

- From the beginning of forever, thetans (souls) created matter, energy, space, and time (MEST) and they became trapped in bodies. 75 million years ago, there was a galactic federation with 75 planets including Earth. Xenu, the ruler, used psychiatrists to drug and export people to Earth to deal with the overpopulation problem. Their bodies were placed by volcanoes which were planted with bombs. They then became disembodied souls, causing engrams.

- Medical: Don\'t believe in use of psychiatry. Drugs are a way to intentionally disrupt mental clearness. It\'s a conspiracy. Religious: view other religions, especially Christianity as delusions, or \"Xenu.\" Federal government: IRS did not recognize them as tax-exempt until 1993. FDA did not allow E-meters to be considered medical devices. FBI was infiltrated from 1966 to 1977 to get access to documents. International: particularly in Europe, conflicts are severe.
