What are Subatomic Particles?
Particles that are small compared to an atom. Protons, Neutrons, Electrons are Subatomic Particles that make up an atom.
What is the nucleus in terms of an Atom?
positively charged center of an atom.
What is a Proton?
Subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom. Has a positive electric charge.
AMU (Atomic Mass Unit)
Unit of measurement for atomic mass.
Mass Number
Atomic mass rounded to nearest whole number.
Atomic Mass
combined mass of all particles, protons, neutrons, electrons.
Electron
Subatomic particle located on the outside of a nucleus. It has a negative charge.
Energy Level
path of electrons around nucleus.
What does the atomic number determine?
The number of protons in the nucleous of one atom of the element. Because an atomic is neutral, it also determins the number of electrons surrounding the nucelous.
Using the "rule" set by the atomic number, how can we determine the number of neutrons?
We take the number of protons and electrons as determined by atomic number and subtract it from the Mass number (atomic mass rounded to nearest whole number). That gives you how many neutrons there are.
What does AMU stand for?
Atomic Mass Unit.
How many AMUs is a proton or a neutron?
One.
How many electrons can be contained in an atom's 1st primary energy level? 2nd Primary Energy Leve? 3rd Primary Energy Level?
max 2, max 8, max 18
How do we organize the Bohr Model?
# of protons and neutrons go in the nucleous and # of electrons go on each energey level respectively.
What is the Phil Order?
1s2-2s2-2p6-3s2-3p6-4s2-3d10-4p6
Using Neon, with an atomic number of 10, what would be its electron configuration?
1s2 2s2 2p6
#22 Titanium?
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4
