Valence shell
The outermost shell of an atom. Electrons in this shell are the valence electrons.
Free electron
An electron that has absorbed a photon with sufficient energy to escape from the atom.
Ion
When an atom or group of atoms is left with a net charge.
Coulomb
The unit of charge. Electrical charge (Q) measured in coulombs, symbolized by C. 6.25 X 10 (18th).
Voltage
The difference in potential energy per charge is the potential difference.
Current
The movement of electrons.
Ampere
(A) the amount of current that exists when a number of electrons having a total charge of one coulomb (1C) move through a given cross-sectional area in on second.
Resistance
The opposition to current. Expressed in ohms (Ω)
Semiconductors have x elctrons in their valence shell.
4 electons in valence shell.
Series-connected batteries
the positive electrode of one cell is connected to the negative electrode of the next and so on.
Parallel-connected battery
the positive electrodes of several cells are connected together and all the negative electodes are conncected together. Increases battery capacity.
A generator converts...
...mechanical energy into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction.
A motor converts...
...electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Three things necessary to make a generator, alternator, or a motor work.
Wire
Magnetic Field
Motion
Resistor size does not...
...determine resistance value, only how much heat it can get rid of.
Decode a 4 band resistor
1st - first digit
2nd - second digit
3rd - number of zeros
4th - percent tolerance
Resistor color codes 0 - 4

Resistor tolerance colors and values
gold - plus or minus 5%
silver - plus or minus 10%
Third band special multiplier: gold
multiply the first two-digit result by 0.1
XY x 0.1 = X.Y
Third band special multiplier: silver
Multiply the first two-digit result by 0.01.
XY x .01 = .XY

chapter 2
Voltage =
W/Q energy divided by charge(where W is expressed by joules)
I (current)
Q/t current equals charge divided by time
G (conductance)
1/R Conductance is reciprocal of resistance
Thermistor
Type of variable resistor that is temperature sensitive
Negative thermistor
resistance chrge inversely with temperature change
Positive thermistor
resistance change directly with temperature change
Load
an element connected across the output terminals of a circuit that draws current from the source and upon which work is done
SPST
single post single throw switch
DPDT
double post double throw
AWG
American Wire Gauge
Circular mil
a unit of cross-sectional area used for wires
CM
1CM
wire with diameter of .001 inch
