- 1. Ecosystems are influenced by a combination of what two factors? Distinguish btw the two factors.
- By a combination of biological and physical factors. Biological influences on organisms w/in an ecosystem called biotic factors. include entire living cast of characters w/ which an organism might interact. Physical, or nonliving factors that shape ecosystems are called abiotic factors.
- 2. Why did the author use the analogy of a person's address when discussing niche?
- if an organism's habitat is its address, its niche is its occupation
- 3. What is a niche?
- the full range of physical & biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way in which the organism uses those conditions.
- 4. What concept did the example of the warbler and spruce in fig. 4-6 represent?
- Each of these warbleer species has a diff. niche in its spruce tree habitat. By feeding in diff. A's of the tree, the birds avoid competing w/ one another for food.
- 5. What would happen if the two of the warbler species occupied the same niche?
- They could compete for food if 2 of the warbler species occupied the same niche.
- 6. What does the term resource refer to?
- any necessity of life, such as water, nutrients, light, food,/space.
- 7. How can comptetition affect an ecosystem?
- community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem. Direct competition in nature often results in a winner and a loser w losing organism failing to survive.
- 8. State the competitive exclusion principle?
- states that no 2 species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time.
- 12. Briefly describe the process of ecological succession.
- Ecosystems are constantly changing in response->natural & human disturbances. As an ecosystem changes, older inhabitants gradually dies out and new organisms move in, causing further changes in the community.Ex. clearing a forest
