- FAIR USE
- The use of a portion of copyrighted material in a way that does not infringe the owner's rights. The use of a portion of material for educational purposes, literary criticism or new reporting is often considered a fair use
- FALSE LIGHT
- Using a likeness in a context which implies something untrue and unflattering
- FELONY
- Serious crime punishable by incarceration for a year or more. Includes rape, muder, robbery, burglary, and arson
- FICTITIOUS
- Of, relating to, or characterized by fiction; imaginary
- FIDUCIARY
- A person or institution who manages money or property for another and who must exercise a standard care imposed by law, ex: personal representative or executor of an estate, a trustee, etc.
- FIDUCIARY DUTY
- An obligation to act in the best interest of another party. For instance, a corporation's board memeber has a fiduciary duty to the shareholders, a trustee has a fiduciary duty to the trust's beneficiaries, and an attorney has a fiduciary duty to a client
- FORCE MAJEURE CLAUSE
- A force majeure clause in a contract may suspend certain obligations in the event production is halted because of forces beyond the control of the parties such as a fire, strike, earthquake, war or act of god
- FORESEEABILITY
- A key issue in determining a person's liability. If a defendant could not reasonably have foreseen that someone might be hurt by his or her actions , then there may be no liability
- FRANCHISE
- A business relationship in which an owner (the franchisor) licenses others (the franchisees) to operate outlets using business concepts, property, trademarks and tradenames owned by the franchisor
- GENERAL PARTNER
- One of two kinds of partners in a limited partnership. a general partner has the right to participate in the management of the partnership and has unlimited personal liability for its debts
- GOOD FAITH
- Honestly and without deception. An agreement might be declared invalid if one of the parties entered with the intention of defrauding the other
- GRANT
- To give or permit. To bestow or confer
- GRIEVANCE
- In labor law a complaint filed by an employee regarding working conditions to be resolved by procedural machinery provided in the union contract. An injury, injustice, or wrong which gives ground for complaint
- GROSS NEGLIGENCE
- Failure to use even the slightest amount of care in a way that shows reckless or willful disregard for the safety of others
- GUARDIAN
- Person assigned by the court to take care of minor children or incompetent adults. Sometimes called a conservator
- HEIRS
- Persons who are entitled by law to inherit the property of the deceased if there is no will specifying how it's divided
- HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT SEXUAL HARASSMENT
- Where a person is subject to unwelcome secual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature to such an extent that it alters the conditions of the person's employment and creates an abusive working environment
