- threatened
- if its population could become endangered in the near future
- photosynthesis
- the process by which green plants and certain other organisms synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using light as an energy source and usually releasing oxygen aas a byproduct
- extinct
- when its last known member dies
- ground water
- underground water that is held in the soil and in pervious rocks
- endangered
- when its population is so small it may become extinct
- seasons
- regular divisions of the year
- water cycle
- the continuous process by which water moves through the living and non living parts of the environment
- transpiration
- the emission of water vapor from the leaves of plants
- carbon cycle
- the process in an ecosystem in which producers take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and consumers, having eaten producers, release carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide
- monsoons
- seasonal wind patterns that cause wet and dry seasons
- flood
- occurs when an ecosystem than it can use or store
- evaporation
- the process of becoming a vapor
- precipitation
- the falling to earth of any form of water (rain or snow or hail or sleet or mist)
- respiration
- energy in a sugar molecule is released by this process
- cycle
- regular pattern
- native species
- plants and animal species that originally lived in an ecosysytem
- invasive species
- Species that are not native to the area and can cause harm
- condensation
- the act of increasing the density of something
- succession
- gradual changes in the populations of organisms in an ecosystem
- drought
- occurs when an ecosystem receives less rainfall than it needs
- stomate
- An opening on the surface of a leaf. Carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water vapor pass in and out of the stomates. Guard cells control the opening and closing of the stomates.
- stress
- any physical hazard to life caused by having too much or too little of things needed for life
