Summarize the heretical teaching known as universalism and refute it with Biblical evidence
Basically universalism is the belief that God is love and because He is, He will ultimately save all people God’s love doesn’t operate apart from His other qualities. His love cannot overpower His holiness and save those who reject Christ and die in their sins. He is holy and His holiness demands that the price of our sins be paid. Christ died to pay the price for our sins. If we chose to reject His gift, then we must pay that price.

Why is it appropriate for God to be jealous and what circumstances cause Him to become appropriately jealous?
God is sovereign and worthy and deserving of our praise, worship, honor and allegiance. He becomes jealous when we give others anything that rightly belongs to Him
Explain what is involved in correctly understanding passages that seem to present God as “repenting” and not sending the judgment He warned He would send. Be sure to include the three principles related to this matter
The Hebrew word used in those passages is naham. It’s from the root verb meaning to sigh, breath strongly. Therefore naham is used in a sense of feeling deep emotion. Some passages should be understood in the sense of God being grieved over the wickedness of man. The Hebrew word shib is used to indicate human repentance. It means to “change your mind” or “to turn”
List and explain the four basic aspects of God’s providence
1.General providence a.God cares for all things and people, providing all their needs to suit His purpose. b.He preserves all things that He created. 2.Special Providence a.He directly and actively intervenes in peoples lives. b.God overcomes peoples “misfortunes” to accomplish His purpose for them 3.Preventative providence a.God sometimes prevents things He knows are harmful or sinful 4.Permissive providence a.He permits people to rebel against Him and suffer the consequences
What is the purpose that characterizes everything God has done, is doing, or ever will do?
His glory
Does God’s sovereignty make Him the source of sin and evil? Explain your answer, giving the basis for that answer
God is absolutely holy. For Him to be the source or creator of sin contradicts the very basis of His character. God didn’t create sin, but he allowed the possibility of sin to come into the world. Mankind is responsible for that making the choice that let sin into our world. God could have prevented sin, but He didn’t and so that makes it a part of His sovereign plan. God can do no wrong so there must be a purpose for sin that is beyond our comprehension.
If God is in control, how can the world be so filled with evil?
He is omniscient and wise and He could stop sin and evil in their tracks if He wanted to. The fact that He doesn’t means that it’s a part of a bigger picture that we don’t see. God can only do what is right and what is best. Eliminating sin and evil would also mean God eliminating our free will. God wants us to come to Him willingly and lovingly. I don’t think He wanted robots.
List and explain the three different aspects of God’s will
1)A perfect aspect 2)A permissive aspect 3)A providential aspect
If God is in control, why do wicked people sometimes prosper? Include why we should not envy wicked people who prosper
God is wise and omniscient and He does everything in the best way possible to achieve His purpose. God is gracious, merciful and patient. We were all wicked people at some point before we repented and turned to God. If He decided to wipe out all of the evil people in the world right this minute, it would mean that they would all go to hell. God wants to give people a chance to repent. And sometimes wicked people make smart decisions. It’s a simple cause and affect situation. He wants to bestow the same grace, mercy and patience on the wicked as he bestowed on us. Just because the wicked prosper now, doesn’t mean that they will always. There will come a time of judgment
Does the sovereignty of God contradict the free will of mankind? Explain your answer
If we didn’t have free wills, why did God give us commands and consequences for disobeying those commands? We have to choose to repent and believe in Christ. The fact that many will die w/o being saved is an indication that God, who wants everyone to be saved, lets everyone use their own free will.
The appropriate ways for us to respond to God’s sovereignty
1)A sense of awe and reverence 2)A passionate desire to worship Him 3)The confidence that God is in control 4)An assurance that God can bring good out of evil 5)A moment by moment trust in God 6)Dependence upon Him to meet our needs 7)Humble submission 8)Obedience to Him in daily life 9)Gratitude that God desires to use us in His work 10)A desire to serve Him faithfully and bring Him glory
Be able to explain what the term “Trinity” does not mean and what it does mean

Reasons why godly people sometimes suffer

Beneficial purposes God accomplishes through suffering
1)To promote practical holiness and spiritual growth 2)Discipline 3)Instruction 4)Bringing us into obedience of His will
Biblical admonitions concerning false gods
1)No other god was to take His rightful place 2)No images of heathen gods 3)Don’t call on the name of other gods 4)Don’t make covenants w/people who worship idols 5)Worship of other Gods is an abomination to the one true God
Evidence that each member of the Trinity is God
1) Each member is specifically called God 2) Each member posses the attributes of God 3) Each member does things only God can do
Old Testament evidence for the existence of the Trinity
1)The Hebrew word for God, Elohim, is used most frequently in the plural sense 2)Some OT passages distinguish persons within the trinity
New Testament evidence for the existence of the Trinity
1)Each one is specifically called God 2)Is evident in the virgin birth of Jesus 3)Evident at the baptism of Jesus 4)In the earthly ministry of Jesus 5)Evident in Jesus’ promise to send the Holy spirit 6)Evident in Jesus’ command to baptize 7)Apostolic benediction 8)Salvation
