- Bridling
- v. putting a bridle on a horse Rachel bridled the horse before her jumping lesson
- Perpetual
- adj. lasting forever The perpetual water cycle is God’s design to continually circulate water from one place to another on the earth.
- Sage
- adj. very wise In times of need, I seek the advice of my pastor, a sage teacher and counselor.
- Beaker
- n. a large drinking cup or gas with a wide mouth If you consume a beaker of beer in one gulp, you will likly feel bad the next day.
- Civilization
- n. An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions. The early Egyptian civilization needed the Nile River for drinking water and transportation.
- Dispatch
- v. kill The poacher dispatched the poor rabbit just to have the skin.
- Ebb
- v. the flowing back of the tide as the water returns to the sea (opposed to FLOOD, FLOW ). The water ebbed back as it returns to the sea.
- Foe
- n. a person who feels enmity, hatred, or malice toward another; enemy The deadliest foe of democracy is not autocracy but liberty frenzied.
- League
- n. group; class; category As a pianist he just simply isn't in your league.
- Malign
- v. evil in effect; pernicious; baleful; injurious The gloomy house had a malign influence upon her usually good mood.
- Phosphorescent
- adj. Emission of light without burning or by very slow burning without appreciable heat, as from the slow oxidation of phosphorous He saw the phosphorescence of the Gulf weed in the water.
- Reverence
- n. a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe; veneration. Everyone should reverence the Lord God .
- Scepter
- n. a rod or wand borne in the hand as an emblem of regal or imperial power. The pharaoh would hold a scepter to show he has power.
- Scythed
- n. an agricultural implement consisting of a long, curving blade fastened at an angle to a handle, for cutting grass, grain, etc., by hand. The farmer used a scythed to cut the grain by hand.
- Silhouette
- n. the outline or general shape of something The slim silhouette of a skyscraper was very pretty.
- Contemplate
- v. to watch intently; meditate The high school graduate had to carefully contemplate his college choices
- Despot
- n. tyrant The despotic king carelessly led his young soldiers into battle, causing many casualties.
- Footling
- n. to be foolish Hunter is a footling compared to Gilgamesh.
- Ivory
- n. hard, white substance in elephant’s tucks The greedy poacher killed the elephant in order to sell the ivory from its tusks.
- Lapis, Lazuli
- n. azure opaque semiprecious stone The queen had a valuable lapis, mined from South America, set into the middle of her crown.
- Lintels
- n. a horizontal architectural member supporting the weight above an opening, as a window or a door. The limestone lintel not only supported the weight above the widow, but gave the window a decorative design.
- Loped
- v. cut off When the Roman soldiers were coming to arrest Jesus, Peter loped one of the soldier’s ears.
- Meteor
- n. fiery meteoroid traveling through the earth’s atmosphere The meteor shower was only visible in the dark night sky.
- Buttress
- n. outer structure supporting a wall The city’s buttress was damaged in the attack and caused the protective wall to collapse.
