Military Industrial Complex
A network of a nation's military force together with all of the industries that support it.
1980 Boycott of Olympic Games
Though the Games have aimed to be an arena free of politics, the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan spurred United States President Jimmy Carter to issue an ultimatum that the United States would boycott the Moscow Olympics if Soviet troops had not withdrawn from the country by 12:01 A.M. Eastern Standard Time on February 20, 1980; the official announcement confirming the boycott was made on March 21

A United States federal law that greatly restricts the activities and power of labor unions.
Birth of Communist China
Major combat in the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949 with the Communist Party of China in control of the mainland, and the Kuomintang retreating to Taiwan and some outlying islands of Fujian. On October 1, 1949 Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China, declaring "the Chinese people have stood up".[
Vienna Conference
The first international conference on ozone layer depletion. It was held in Vienna, Austria in 1985 when a hole in the stratospheric ozone layer was obsereved in the South Pole marked by increased UV-B infilteration over Antarctica.
Kitchen Debate
The Kitchen Debate was the first high-level meeting between Soviet and U.S. leaders since the Geneva conferences in 1955. It took place in Moscow on July 24th, 1959, in the kitchen of a suburban model house, cut in half so it could be viewed easily.
Sputnik
Any of a series of Soviet satellites sent into Earth orbit, especially the first, launched October 4, 1957.
CIA (rise of)
The Central Intelligence Agency was created by Congress with National Security Act of 1947, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. It is the descendant of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) of World War II, which was dissolved in October 1945 and its functions transferred to the State and War Departments.
U2 Incident
The incident when an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. The U.S. denied the true purpose of the plane at first, but was forced to when the U.S.S.R. produced the living pilot and the largely intact plane to validate their claim of being spied on aerially. The incident worsened East-West relations during the Cold War and was a great embarrassment for the United States.
Helsinki Accords
The final act of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe held in Helsinki, Finland in December, 1975 between the United States, Canada, the Soviet Union, and the countries of Europe (including Turkey but excluding Albania and Andorra). It was signed by 35 countries.
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
A nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan government against the Mujahideen resistance.
Eisenhower Doctrine
The doctrine stated that the United States would use armed forces upon request in response to imminent or actual aggression to the United States. Furthermore, countries that took stances opposed to Communism would be given aid in various forms.
