Adaptation
Any characteristic of an organism that makes it better able to survive in its environment
Biogenisis
The theory that living things come only from other living things.
Cell
The smallest unit of an organism that can perform life functions.
Control
The standard for comparison in an experiment.
Development
All the changes undergone by living things as they grow.
Homeostasis
The regulation of steady, life-maintaining conditions inside an organism or cell, despite changes in its environment.
Hypothesis
A prediction that can be tested.
Law
A rule that describes a pattern in nature and what will happen under specific conditions.
Life Span
The legnth of time an organism is expected to live.
Organism
A living thing that is made up of one or more cells and is organized to perform life functions.
Response
The reaction of an organism to a stimulus.
Scientific Methods
Problem-solving procedures used by scientists. Define problem, gather data, draw hypothesis, perform experiment, analyze data, and draw conclusions.
Spontaneous Generation
The theory that nonliving things produce living things. This was believed for much of history.
Stimulus
Anything an organism responds to, such as sound, light, heat, vibration, movement, etc.
Technology
The use of scientific knoledge to improve the quality of human life or to solve problems.
Theory
A description of nature based on many observations and subject to change when evidence changes.
Variable
The factor tested in an experiment.
Chemistry
The study of elements and matter.
Physics
The study of how energy and matter are related.
Earth Science
The study of the structure of Earth and the forces that affect it.
