- organ system
- multiple organs that work together to perform a specific function
- community
- an assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area
- asexual reproduction
- the process by which a single parent reproduces by itself
- observability
- the event under study can be observed and explained. However, it is limited to the human senses and machines used to intensify them
- data
- evidence; information gathered from observations
- biology
- science that seeke to understand the living world
- cell
- a collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates it from its surroundings; basic unit of all forms of life
- population
- a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area
- ecosystem
- a collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place together with their non-living environment.
- tentativeness
- scientific theories are subject to revision and correction. Theories are modified and continue to be modified to consistanty explain observations of naturally occuring events
- inference
- a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience
- homeostasis
- a process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
- controlled experiement
- a test to see the effect of a single variable by changing it while keeping all other variables the same
- qualitative
- pertaining to or concerned with quality or qualities. Ex: the ball is green
- theory
- a well tested explaination that unifiesa broad range of observations
- metabolism
- a set of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes
- differentiation
- a process in which cells become specialized in structure and function
- organ
- group of tissue that work together to perform closely related functions
- autotroph
- an organism that can capture energy from sunlight and chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compounds; also called a producer
- consistancy
- the result of repeated observations and experiments concerning a naturally occuring event are similar when repeated. It is free from self-contradiction
- hypothesis
- a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question
- DNA
- a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions use in the development and functioning of all known living things
- evolution
- a change in a knid of organism over time; also a process by which modern organisms have decended from ancient organisms
- sexual reproduction
- the process by which cells from 2 different parents unite to produce the first cell of a new organism
- stimulus
- a signal to which an organism responds to
- natural
- used to explain why or how naturally occuring events happen. There are no experiments in which is designed to have a supreme being in the test
- eukaryote
- an organism whose cells contain nuclei
- independent variable
- a factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes; also known as the manipulated variable
- science
- an organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world. Also the body of knowledge that scientists have after years of using this process
- testability
- the natural cause of the naturally occurring event must be testable through the processes of science. Controlled experimentation being essential
- quantitative
- of or pertaining to the describing or measuring of quantity. Ex: there are 3 balls
- observation
- use of one or more of the senses... sight, smell, touch, and sometimes taste to gather information
- prokaryote
- unicellular lacking a nucleus
- controlled variables
- a factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely keeps the same
- biosphere
- part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air/ atmosphere
- tissue
- a group of similar cells that perform a particular function
- heterotroph
- an organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer
- variable
- a factor in an experiment that can change
- predictablity
- the natural cause of the naturally occuring event can be used to make specific predictions
- organism
- an individual living system
- dependent variables
- a factor in an experiment that a scientist wants to observe which may change because of the manipulated variable; also known as a responding variable
