- a movement in literature and art during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe that favored rationality and restraint and strict forms

- the repetition of similar vowels in the stressed syllables of successive words

- the repitition of sounds, most often consonat sounds, at the begining of words. Alliteration gives emphasis to words.

- a line spoken by an actor to the audience but not intended for others on the stage

- a change from a serious subject to a disappointing one
- couplet
- a stanza consisting of two successive lines of verse
- carpe diem
- latin-"seize the day"-enjoy the moment-a theme in lyric poetry
- antithesis
- the juxtaposition of contrasting words or ideas to give a feeling of balance
- caesura
- a pause or break within a line of poetry
- apostrophe
- A technique by which a writer address an inanimate object, an idea, or a person who is either ded or absent.
