- what are the factors of 15
- 1, 3, 5
- what are the multiples of 6
- 6, 12, 18, 24...
- What are the numbers you add together called?
- addend
- What does distinct mean?
- Distinct is just a mathematical term for 'different'. If a question stipulates that a and b are distinct integers, they can't have the same value. For example, the distinct prime factors of 72 are 2 and 3 because you only want to count one 2 and one 3.
- What is a digit?
- There are only 10 digits (0 through 9), from which we make an infinite number of numbers. For example, 305 is a three-digit number. 3 is the hundreds digit, 0 is the tens digit, and 5 is the ones or units digit.
- What is a factor?
- If one number divides evenly into another, then the first number is a factor of the second. For example, 3 is a factor of 12. The pairs of numbers whose product is 12 are: 1 x 12, 2 x 6, 3 x 4. Therefore, the factors of 12 are: {1,2,3,4,6, and 12}.
- What is a multiple?
- "A multiple of a number is the product of that number and any other whole number.
- What is a prime number?
- "Prime numbers are divisible by only themselves and 1. By definition, 1 is NOT prime. Also, only positive numbers are prime.
- What is a remainder?
- "If a number is not divisible by another, there will be a remainder left over.
- What is an integer?
- An integer is a number that is neither a fraction nor a decimal. Think of integers as counting numbers that you see on a number line. Zero is also an integer

- The property that states that the product of 0 and any number is 0
- base ten number system
-
This is our common number system. It’s also called the “decimal†system.
It uses ten symbols (or digits) to count. Digit also means “fingerâ€, and we have 10 fingers. The digit zero holds the place for an empty column, and the digits 1 to 9 tell how many ones, tens, hundreds, etc. are in any particular column. - Decimal / Decimal Fraction
-
To write numbers as decimals we use only 10 and powers of ten as denominators.
Writing fractions this way saves us from writing the denominators because they are understood. When we write 375/1,000 as a decimal (0.375) the denominator of 1,000 is understood - Equivalent fractions
-
Fractions equal in value, but may have different numerators and denominators.
2/3 and 14/21 are equivalent - percent
- A percent is the number of parts out of 100 of something. For example, a quarter (25 cents) is 25 percent of a dollar (100 cents). fraction 25/100 is 25%. To convert a decimal number, like .72 to a percent, you just multiply it by 100. So the decimal .72 becomes (100 X .72) = 72 percent.
- ratio
- The ratio of 2 numbers is the first number divided by the second number. For example, the ratio of 8 to 4 is 2.
- Unit fraction
-
A unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator of 1.
Examples of unit fractions include 1/2, 1/3, 1/12.
