- a man who live about 100 yrs. after Phidias who created figures that were more lifelike and natural inform and size

- the study of basic questions of reality and human existence

- plays containing action or dialogue and involving conflict and emotion

- a play writer who was a realist and questioned many old beliefs and ideas

- one of history's greatest sculptors who lived in the golden age. sculped the famous figure the Discus Thrower

- a philopher who believed that everything could be explained in terms of mathematics he is known for a2 + b2 = c2

- a writer of Greek comedies who was known for his sharp wit and made fun of Socrates for his theories aout education. He disliked war and used comedy to make Athenians think about hte causes and effects of war

- a writer of tragedies who defended many traditional Greek values

- a man who believed that humans could not reach perfecton (one of Socrates' students)
- Tragedies
- the main character struggled against fate, or events usually a combination of outside forces defeated the main character. Often tragic heroes were punished for displaying hubris of the sin of pride

- a man who trained doctors to base medical treatment on reason, not magic
- Thucydides
- A Greek historian that became famous for his History of hte PEloponnesian War. He believed that studying the past helps us to understand human nature
- Parthenon
- a white marble templee built in hhonor of Athena
- Phidias
- one of history's greates sculptors who lived during hte golden age. He created the Statues of Athena that decorated teh Acropolis and the Parthenon and his greatest work was the statue of Zeus at the Temple of Olympia

- a man who believed that knowledge could only be gained through logical study (one of Plato's students)

- the Greeks faces adn figures of men and women that represented the Greek ideal of beauty They made art for public enjoyment that symbolized Greeks' pride in their city-states. THey search for clamness, clarity, and feedom from anydetails not absolutely necessary too express Greek beliefs in harmony, balance, oreder, and moderation Greek art was functional and had a clearly defined purpose that expressed the Greek velief in combining beauty and usefulness
