- Assimilation
- social sciences the process in which one group takes on the cultural and other traits of a larger group. To be absorbed into the larger group. Give up some of there selves.
- Capitalism
- an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivation by profit.
- Contingent worker
- a temporary employee, often employed for a specific task.
- Discrimination
- unfair treatment of one person or group, usually because of prejudice about race, ethnic group, age group, religion, or gender.
- Melting pot (amalgamation)
- Various heritages have influenced one another, blending together to create a unique American culture.
- Multicultural Theory (pluralistic
- Each group retains some of its customs and each group coexist. Live and let live.
- Ideology
- A system of assumptions, theories, and beliefs characterizing a particular group or culture.
- Eurocentrictiy
- The assumption of the supremacy of European Americans and their values and traditions.
- Patriarchy
- A system of social structure in a culture where the power is male dominated.
- Prejudice
- Negative attitudes about certain groups of people.
- Racism
- the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior.
- Sexism
- discrimination against women or men because of their sex.
- Classism
- discrimination or prejudice based on social or economic class.
- Feminism
- the movement committed to securing and defending equal rights and opportunities for women equal to those of men.
- Ethnicity
- Membership in a subgroup within an environment dominated by another culture.
- Social Construct
- A classisfication based on social values. Order of importance or value.
- Theory
- an idea of or belief about something arrived at through speculation or conjecture.
- Gender Role
- The masculine and feminine behaviors.
- Socialization
- the process involved when young children are becoming aware of society and learning how they are expected to behave.
- Protestant work ethic
- The idea that hard work and good faith will be rewarded.
- Stereotype
- an oversimplified standardized image or idea held by one person or group of another.
- Institutionalized
- Built into the system.
- Class
- a group of people within a society who share the same social and economic status.
- Internalize
- to adopt the beliefs, values, and attitudes of others, either consciously or unconsciously.
- Socialism
- a political theory or system in which the means of production and distribution are controlled by the people and operated according to equity and fairness rather than market principles.
- Violence
- the use of physical force to injure somebody or damage something.
