- a series of more than 25 complex proteins that normally circulate in the blood in an inactive form. activated by contact w/ an antigen they puncture the antigen's cell membrane

- a group of large, herpes-type viruses that cause a variety of diseases

- breast cancer at its earliest stage before the cancer has broken through the wall of the milk duct

- distruction of red blood cells

- an acute viral infection characterized by painful skin eruptions that follow the underlying foute of the inflamed nerve

- a malignancy of the lymphatic system that is distinguished from non-Hodgkin's by the presence of reed-sternberg cells

- a condition that occurs when one or more parts of the immune system are deficient, missing or not working properly

- secreted by B cells also known as antibodies

- specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the immune system

- a substance that prevents or reduces the body's normal immune response
- immunotherapy
- a treatment of disease by either stimulating or repressing the immune response
- infectious mononucleosis
- an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus that is characterized by fever, a sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes
- infiltrating ductal carcinoma
- breast cancer that starts in the milk duct, breaks through the wall of that duct and invades the surrounding fatty breast tissue aka invasive ductal carcinoma
- interferon
- produced by the T cells, is a family of proteins whose speciality is fighting viruses by slowing or stopping their multiplication
- lymphadenitis
- inflammation of the lymph nodes; aka swollen glands
- lymphadenopathy
- any disease process usually envolving the englargement of the lymph nodes
- lymphangiography
- a radiographic exammination of the lymphatic vessels after an injection of a contrast medium
- lymphangioma
- a benign tumor caused by a collection of lymphatic vessels
- lymphedema
- swelling due to an accumulation of an abnormal accumulation of lymph w/in the tissues
- lymphocytes
- formed in bone marrow as stem cells, are white blood cells that specialize to act as antibodies so they can attack specific antigens
- lymphokines
- produced by the T cells, direct the immune response by signaling between the cells of the immune system.
- lymphoma
- a general term applied to malignancies that develop in the lymphatic system
- macrophage
- protects the body by eating invading cells and by interacting with the other cells of the immune system
- metastasis
- the noun that describes a new cancer site that results from the spreading process
- metastasize
- the verb that describes the process by which cancer spreads from one place to another
- moniliasis
- infections of the skin or mucous membranes caused by the pathogenic yeast candida albicans
- myoma
- a benign tumor made up of muscle tissue
- myosarcoma
- a malignant tumor derived from muscle tissue
- neoplasm
- a new and abnormal tissue formation in which the multiplication of cells is uncontrolled, abnormally rapid, and progressive; aka tumor
- non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
- the term used to describe all other lymphomas other than Hodgkin's

- specializes in diagnosing and treating malignant disorders such as tumors and cancer
- oncology
- study of malignant disorders such as tumors/cancer
- opportunistic infection
- pathogen that normally does not cause disease; however if host is dibilitated by another condition the pathogen is able to cause illness in a weakened host
- osteosarcoma
- a malignant tumor usually involving the upper shaft of long bones, the pelvis, or knee
- parasite
- plant or animal that lives on or within another living organism at the expense of that organism

- spiral-shaped bacteria that have flexible walls and are capable of movement, causes lyme disease
