burns
tissue damage and cell death caused by intense heat, electricity, UV radiation (sunburn), or certain chemicals (such as acids).
cutaneous membrane
skin. superficial epidermis are layers composed of squamous keratinizing epithelium. underlying dermis is mostly dense (fibrous) connective tissue
dermis
deep layer of the skin; composed of dense, irregular connective tissue
epidermis
the outer layers of the skin; epithelium
exocrine glands
glands that have ducts through which their secretions are carried to a particular site
follicle
flexible epithelial structure. inner sheath, or layer is composed of epithelial tissue and forms the hair. outer sheath is dermal tissue and supplies blood vessels to the epidermal portion and reinforces it.
integument
the external covering of the body. (skin). serves to keep water and other precious molecules in the body. keeps water and others stuff out. pliable, but tough.
keratinizing
becoming hard and tough. refers specifically to keratin, a tough, insoluble protein found in tissues such as hair, nails, and epidermis of the skin
melanin
the dark pigment synthesized by melanocytes; responsible for skin color.
mucous membrane
membrane that forms the linings of body cavities open to the exterior (digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts)
nails
scalelike modification of the epidermis that corresponds to the hoof or claw of other animals. Each nail has a free edge, a body, and a root.
sebaceous (oil) glands
glands that empty their sebum secretion into hair follicles.
serous membrane
a clear, watery fluid secreted by the cells of a serous membrane, the membrane that lines a caviity without an opening to the outside of the body (except for joint cavities.); serosa
subcutaneous tissue
adipose tissue not considered a part of the skin, but instead anchors skin to the underlying organs
sweat glands
the glands that produce a saline solution called sweat; also called sudoriferous glands.
synovial membrane
membrane that lines the capsule of a synovial joint, a freely movable joint exhibiting joint cavity enclosed by an articular (fibrous) capsule lined with synovial membrane.
