- DISEASE
- A condition that interferes with the proper functioning of the body or mind.
- COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
- A disease that can be passed from one person to another.
- NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASE
- Diseases such as asthma and cancer that cannot spread from one person to another.
- GERMS
- Microorganisms that cause disease.
- INFECTION
- Germs that get inside the body, multiply and damage body cells.
- VIRUS
- Smallest and simplest life form. They cause diseases.
- BACTERIA
- Tiny, one celled organisms that live nearly everywhere. Many, but not all are harmless.
- FUNGI
- Primitive life forms that cannot make their own food. (Athlete's foot)
- PROTOZOA
- One-celled animal like organisms.
- IMMUNE SYSTEM
- A combination of body defenses made up of cells, tissues and organs that fight off germs and diseases.
- LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
- Secondary circulatory system that helps the body fight germs and maintain its fluid balance.
- LYMPOCYTES
- Special white blood cells in the lymph.
- ANTIGENS
- Substances that send your immune systems into action when your body is invaded by germs.
- ANTIBODIES
- Proteins that attach to antigens, keeping them from harming the body.
- IMMUNITY
- Your body's ability to resist the germs that cause a particular disease.
- VACCINE
- A preparation of dead or weakened germs that is injected into the body to cause the immune system to produce antibodies.
- INFLUENZA
- A communicable disease characterized by fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches and respiratory symptoms.
- MONONUCLEOSIS
- Mono-the"kissing disease"-A virus-caused disease characterized by swelling of the lymph nodes in neck and throat-get very tired.
- HEPATITIS
- A virus caused liver inflammation characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes.
- TUBERCULOSIS
- (TB) A bacteria-caused disease that usually afects the lungs.
- CONTAGIOUS PERIOD
- The length of time when a particular disease can spread frim person to person.
- SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
- (STDs)Disease spread from person to person through sexual contact.
- CHLAMYDIA
- Bacteria-caused STD that may affect the reproductive organs, urethre and anus.
- GONORRHEA
- Bacteria-caused STD that affects the genital mucous membrane and sometimes other body parts, such as the heart or joints.
- GENITAL HERPES
- An STD caused by a virus that produces painful blisters in the genital area.
- SYPHILIS
- A bacteria-caused STD that can affect many parts of the body.
- AIDS
- Acquired Immunedeficiency Syndrome. A deadly disease that interferes with the body's ability to fight infections.
- HIV
- Human Immunodeficiency virus. The virus that causes AIDS.
