- Nationalism
- Inclusion of folk songs, dances, legends, and other national material in a composition to associate it with the composer's homeland; characteristic of romantic music.
- Leitmotif
- "Leading motive", or basic recurring theme, representing a person, object or iea, commonly used in Wagner's operas.
- Idee Fixe
- "Fixed Idea", a term coined by Berlioz for a recurring musical idea that links different movements of a work.
- Etude
- Study piece that focuses on a particular technical problem.
- Exoticism
- Musical style in which rhytms, melodies or instruments evoke the color and atmosphere of far off lands.
- Strophic Form
- Song structure in which the same music is repeated with every stanza (strophe) of the poem.
- Whole Tone Scale
- Scale pattern built entirely of whole step intervals, common in the music of the French Impressionists.
