Departments, agencies, bureaus, and offices that perform the functions of the government.
Bureaucracy
Created by Congress to undertake independent commercial enterprises. Presumably they perform a service that the private sector has been unable to perform adequately.
Government corporations
employee of a federal government or of a firm supplying the government who reports waste, mismanagement, and/or fraud by government agency or contractor.
Whistle-blowers
theory describing how some regulated industries come to benefit from government regulation and how some regulatory commissions come to represent the industries they are supposed to regulate rather than representing “the people”.
Capture theory of regulation
lifting of the government rules and bureaucratic supervision from business and professional activity.
Deregulation
- (passed in 1966) requires agencies to allow citizens (and the media) to inspect all public records, with some exceptions for intelligence, current criminal investigations, and personal actions.
Freedom of Information Act
Services performed by legislators and their staffs on behalf of
individual constituents.
Casework
Mutually supportive relationship among interest groups, government agencies, and legislative committees with jurisdiction over a specific policy area
Iron triangle
The movement of individuals from government positions to jobs in the private sector, using experience, knowledge, and contacts they aquired in government employment.
Revolving Doors
These groups/agencies regulate a sector of society--transportation, communication,banking, labor relations.
Independent regulatory commissions
Regulates the nation's monetary policy and credit conditions, supervises and regulates banking activity, and provides various services to banks.
