- Red Herring
- Something that is used to divert attention from the basic issue.
- Evidence
- Something such as a witness statement or object that is used as proof of a crime.
- Detective
- A person who investigates crimes and gathers information.
- Plot
- The arrangement of the incidents in a story.
- Setting
- The time, place, environment, and surrounding circumstances of a story.
- Mystery
- Something that is secret and unknown.
- Motive
- An inner drive that causes a person to do something or act in a certain way.
- Hero
- A good person in a mystery that saves someone or something.
- Villian
- Evil person in a mystery.
- Sleuth
- Another name for a detective.
- Suspect
- A person who might have committed a crime.
- Foreshadowing
- A device the author uses to give hints at what could happen.
- Witness
- Someone who saw or can give a firsthand account of the crime.
- Victim
- Someone who is harmed or suffers some loss.

- A clue that has been planted to mislead a detective.

- Mood
- State of mind, or feeling of the characters or the mystery.

- To infer by logical reasoning.

- A description of a person involved in a mystery.
- Climax
- The high point of the action when the mystery is solved.
- Alibi
- An excuse that an accused person uses to show that he/she was somewhere else than at the scene of the crime.
- Conflict
- Opposing needs or desires of the main characters.
- Clue
- A fact or object that helps to solve mysteries.
- Cliff Hanger
- A scary or interesting position for a character to be in. Keeps the reader interested in the story.

- An advance or discovery that helps solve a crime.
