pros and cons of nuclear energy
can be used in homes. produce dangerous wastes. (the wastes are radioactive). Because nulear power plants generate a lot of energy, large amounts of water are used in cooling towers.
how you can deal with fossil fuel problems
only use your automobile when absolutely necessary. ride a bike or walk. carpool.
hydroelectric energy
electricity produced b falling water
pros and cons of geothermal energy
can be used as a direct source of heat.
gasohol
alcohol is burned as a ful or mixed with gasoline to make a fuel mixture called gasohol
nuclear energy
an alternative source of energy that comes from the nuclei of atoms.
smog
a photochemical fog produced by the reaction of sunlight and air pollutants.
biomass
orgnic matter that contains stored energy.
problems with fossil fuels
sometimes when coal is burned, sulfur dioxide is released. Also, acid precipitation which is rain or snow that has a high acid content due to air pollutants can affect the wildlife, plants, buildings or statues anywhere.
how is coal formed
it starts as bacteria, fungi or swamp plants. then it transforms into peat. then the sediment buries the peat by increasing the pressure and temperature. that turns the peat into lignite. hen the temperature and pressure continue to increase and it eventually forms coal. then with more heat and pressure the coal turns into anthracite.
pros and cons of hydroelecric energy
inexpensive. produces little pollution. renewable. not available everywhere.
coal mining problems
strip mining can desroy wildlife habitats. coal mines that are deep underground, can be hazardous to the men and women working in them.
wind energy
there is a tremendous amount of energy in wind, called wind energy.
geothermal energy
energy produced by heat within the earth's crust
pros and cons of solar energy
can be used to heat your house. good investments in the long run even though they are expensive to install.
petroleum problems
can cause environmental problems. can cause oil spills
strip mining
a process in which rock and soil are stripped from the earth's surface to expose the underlying materials to be mined.
wind turbines
called wind farms. collect wind to produce energy. can be built in only 3-6 months. produce no carbon dioxide. used for other purposes: cattle grazing.
pros and cons of biomass
70 percent of people liveing in developing countries heat their homes and cook their food by burning wood or charcoal.
solar energy
energy from the sun
