Local wind
winds that blow over short distances and affect local weather.
wind vane
measures wind direction
Global winds
wind patterns, caused by the Coriolis effect and travel the earth.
trade winds
Steady winds that occur between the equator and 30 degrees latitude(north & south).
Wind
horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure.
Maritime Tropical Air Mass
Has warm temperatures and lots of moisture. It orginates over warm waters.
Continental Polar air mass
Created by long winter nights and strong cooling, which make the air cold & unstable.
polar easterlies
Winds that blow from northeast to southwest near the north pole and from southeast to northwest near the south pole.
Latitude
invisible lines that go side to side around the globe and are the distance north or south of the equator.
Anemometer
something that measures wind speed.
prevailing westerlies
Winds that blow in he opposite direction from trade winds(towards the poles) and are between 30 & 60 degrees latitude(north & south).
Jet stream
bands of high speed winds in the upper troposphere.
Land breeze
At night, air moves toward the water as the land cools more rapidlly than the water.
Corioles effect
the rotation of the Earth causes moving air and water to change direction to the right north of the equator and left south of the equator. Winds appear to be curving.
air mass
A large body of air that has similar temperature and moisture properties throughout.
Sea breeze
A convection current blows wind from the cooler sea toward warmer land during the day.
doldrums
Calm areas near the equator with little wind and they cause daily rain patterns.
