- Poetry
- A major type of literature that makes use of imagery, figurative language, and sometimes rhyme. Rather than paragraphs it is written in stanzas.
- Realistic Fiction
- Fictional story where people and events are realistic and could happen in real life. Setting is usually in modern (contemporary) times.
- Science Fiction
- Fictional story that combines elements of fantasy and scientific facts. Often set in the future.
- Autobiography
- A form of nonfiction in which a writer tells his/her own life story
- Biography
- A form of nonfiction in which a writer tells the life story of another person
- Informational text
- Any type of nonfiction that gives the reader information (facts) about a particular subject
- Non-fiction
- Writing that contains true facts, & tells about real people, places, objects, etc.
- Fantasy
- A highly imaginative story that contains magic, creatures, or other supernatural heroes etc.
- Fiction
- Writing that tells about imaginary (made up) characters and events.
- Fables
- A short story usually with animals as characters that teaches a lesson or moral
- Historical Fiction
- Fictional story that makes use of real events, places or people from history
- Myths
- A fictional tale that uses the actions of gods, heroes to explain the elements of nature.
- Drama
- A dramatic work intended for performance by actors on a stage i.e. a play with roles
