- decomposer/detritiviore
- An organism that breaks down large molecules from dead organisms into small molecules and returns important materials to the environment.
- energy pyramid
- A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web.
- producer
- An organism that can make its own food.
- food web
- The pattern of overlapping food chains in an ecosystem.

- trophic level
- The position of an organism in relation to the flow of energy through an ecosystem (e.g., producer, consumer, and decomposer).
- habitat
- The place where an organism lives and that provides the things the organism needs.
- ecosystem
- All the living and nonliving things that interact in an area.
- consumer
- An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
