- population
- A group of the same type of organismsliving in the same place at the same time.
- biotic factor
- All the organisms that make up the living parts of an ecosystem, including trees, birds, bacteria, and frogs.
- decomposer
- Organisms such as bacteria or fungi that feed on dead organisms and the waste materials of other organisms.
- limiting factor
- A factor that controls the size of a population- for example, the availability of food or the amount of rainfall.
- consumer
- An organism that eats other organisms.
- abiotic factor
- All the nonliving parts of an ecosystem, including air, soil, water, and temperature.
- habitat
- A place in which an organism lives out its life and has resources such as food, space, and shelter that are shared with the different species.
- producer
- An organism such as a plant that is able to use energy from the sun to make is own food
- biosphere
- Part of the Earth in which organisms can live: includes the top layer of the Earth's crust, the surrounding atmosphere, and all the rivers, lakes, and oceans.
- endangered species
- A species with so few living members that it is in danger of becoming extinct.
- ecology
- The study of all the interactions between living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem
- niche
- The role or job of an organism in an ecosystem.
- community
- All the populations living in an area who depend on each other for food, shelter, and other needs.
- ecosystem
- A working unit made up of organisms interacting with each other and with nonliving factors
- threatened species
- A species that is in need of protection but is not in immediate danger of extinction.
