- a very large city, a region made up of several large cities
- permafrost
- a layer of soil just below the Earth's surface that stays permanently frozen

- a hole formed when limestone is dissolved, causing the land above to collapse
- standard living
- a person's or group's level of material well-being, as measured by education, housing, healthcare, and nutrition
- cay
- a small, low island or coral reef
- fossil fuel
- any one of several nonrenewable mineral resources- coal, oil, natural gas- formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals and used for fuel
- refugee
- a person who flees his country to escape invasion, oppression, and persecution
- Bedouin
- nomadic herders that have lived in the southwest asia region's deserts herding camels, goats, and sheep using surrounding resources and knowledge to survive and today settle on outskirts of cities to sell goods

- the study of human populations

- a natural resource that the environment continues to supply or replaces as it is used

- tiny, brightly colored plants that make patterns on rocks in high elevation places and sheltered spots

- people who go to another country for safety

- a person who makes maps or charts

- a country that you get along with- a friendship between countries
- nuclear energy
- a type of energy produced by fission- the splitting of uranium atoms in a nucluer reactor, releasing stored energy
- tributary
- a river or stream that flows into a main river
- defect
- when someone leaves his country without the government's permission
- peninsula
- a strip of land that juts out into the ocean
- population density
- the average number of people in a square mile or a square kilometer
- bedrock
- solid rock underlying all loose material on the Earth's surface
- prairie
- temperate grassland made with a number of different grasses
- savanna
- a tropical grassland with scattered trees, located in the warm lands nearest the Equator
- dictator
- a person who holds all of the power for a specific place
- oasis
- a place where a supply of fresh water makes it possible to support life in a dry region
- isthmus
- a narrow strip of land having water on each side and joining two larger bodies of land
- service industry
- a bussiness that provides a service (hotel, restauraunt, etc.)
- cordillera
- a related set of separate mountain ranges
- gross domestic product
- how much money a country makes in a period of time
