- relief
- the differences in elevation, or height, of landforms in any area
- standard living
- a person's or group's level of material well-being, as measured by education, housing, healthcare, and nutrition
- suburb
- a usually residential area or community on the outer edge of a city
- fjord
- a narrow valley or inlet from the sea, originally carved out by an advancing glacier and filled by melting glacial ice

- a system of authoritarian government headed by a monarch- a king, a queen, shah, or sultan- whose position is usually inherited

- bordering on or near the sea- related to navigation and shipping
- oasis
- a place where a supply of fresh water makes it possible to support life in a dry region
- cordillera
- a related set of separate mountain ranges
- tributary
- a river or stream that flows into a main river
- prairie
- temperate grassland made with a number of different grasses
- savanna
- a tropical grassland with scattered trees, located in the warm lands nearest the Equator
- developed country
- a modern industrial society with a well-developed economy
- permafrost
- a layer of soil just below the Earth's surface that stays permanently frozen
- developing country
- a country with reletively low industrial production, often lacking modern technology
- deciduous
- trees that shed their leaves in the winter (broadleaf)
- geography
- the study of the Earth's surface and the process that shape it, the connections between places, and the complex realtionships between people and their environments
- coniferous
- cone bearing trees (needleleaf)
- geothermal energy
- energy from the earth's intense interior heat, which transforms underground water to steam that can be used to heat homes or to make electricity
- isthmus
- a narrow strip of land having water on each side and joining two larger bodies of land
- renewable resource
- a natural resource that the environment continues to supply or replaces as it is used

- a group of islands

- an area drained by a river and its tributaries

- a person who flees his country to escape invasion, oppression, and persecution
- mestizo
- a person of mixed European and Native American heritage
- constitutional monarchy
- a constitution where there is a royal family with no power (They are just a symbol that people respect)
- lock
- an enclosed section of a canal, in which a ship may be raised or lowered by raising or lowering the level of water in that section : happens in Panama Canal
- dictator
- a person who holds all of the power for a specific place
- continental divide
- a boundary or area of high ground that seperates rivers flowing towards opposite sides of a continent
- bedrock
- solid rock underlying all loose material on the Earth's surface
- lichens
- tiny, brightly colored plants that make patterns on rocks in high elevation places and sheltered spots
- communism
- a syatem of government in which the government controls the means of production, determining what goods would be made, how much workers will get paid, and how much items will cost
- population density
- the average number of people in a square mile or a square kilometer
- gross domestic product
- how much money a country makes in a period of time
- peninsula
- a strip of land that juts out into the ocean

- a small, low island or coral reef
