Systems of Laws
Early Roman laws written on 12 tablets, shown to all. Only Roman citizens need to follow them. Roman laws were written as a code of justice. As Rome expanded laws were combined. TODAY: An accused person was innocent until proven guilty. Roman Empire's system of laws became the base of many country's legal systems including the U.S.
Spread of Greek Ideas
Romans learned Greek art, literature, philosophy, language & architecture. Developed columns & arches. Visitors then used their ideas. TODAY: columns & arches used in today's modern architecture
Latin Language
Latin was the written & spoken language of Rome. Understood throughout the Empire because it was the language of the Roman Catholic Church. TODAY:
Latin is the root for most modern spoken languages including Spanish, English, French & Italian.
Spread of Christianity
Christians were persecuted. They believed in it and refused to give up. People were impressed. Constantine became Christian. TODAY: Christianity is the largest religon.
Greater Freedom for Women
Originally women didn't have much freedom, were given some freedom, including political. Head of house, hold jobs, owned businesses & land. TODAY: women have equal rights.
Development of Dome/Roman
Based on Greek dome, Roman dome was made of concrete. TODAY: we use domes in our capitols.
Aqueduct
Invented because they needed lots of water. Aqueducts built on a slight angle. Some 30-40 miles long. TODAY: we still use aqueducts nowadays.
Network of Concrete Roads
To improve transportation and to unify the Empire, Romans built highways. By 100A.D. 250,000 roads connected the Empire. Roads were developed to last forever & make traveling faster. TODAY: Evolved into modern railroad system, without Roman roads railroads could have come much later than the 1800's.
Military Organization
The Roman government required all citizens who owned land to serve in the Army. Roman Army was divided into legions and centuries. Legions = 6000 men, Centuries = 10 men. They could easily attack enemies. TODAY: Armies today do the same.
Republican Form of Government
Citizens voted. Power was spread evenly. TODAY: Constitution is divided into 3 parts so all have equal power.
