Oda Nobunaga
First of the three unifiers. Ruthless, fights many battles and eventually gets 2/3 of daimyo to swear loyalty. Assassinated with his only heir before the job is done
Toyotomi Hideyoshi
second unifier of Japan, the heir to Oda Nobunaga, took away swords from commoners, started status system, did land survey (1582-98).
Tokugawa Ieyasu
: last unifier of Japan, swore fealty to Hideyoshi before he died, domain in the Kanto region. Moves capital to Edo. First of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Ito Hirobumi
wrote the Meiji Constitution and later served as Prime Minister

Matthew Perry
Commoder of US Navy, sails into Edo bay (1853), very intimidating for the Japanese. He demands trade from Japan and ends up getting them to sign an unequal treaty (Treaty of Kanagawa)
Tokugawa Nariaki
daimyo of Mito domain, favoured imperial rule, wanted to kick the barbarians out
Townsend Harris
First consul general to Japan, wants Shogun to listen to him so more trade could open up with US. Gets Japan to sign the Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1858 (they had no choice and it was unequal)
Abe Masahiro
head of the Bakufu’s senior council (1845-57), asks Daimyo’s opinion on the issue of the West (unprecedented move that shows that the Shogun is in trouble)
Ii Naosuke
Wanted to accept the American demands for time being until the Shogun came up with a decent plan. After becoming head of Senior Council, decides to eliminate his enemies in the Ansei Purge → people who oppose his ideas get killed, back to the dictatorship of past bakufu. Signs the treaty of Amity and Commerce to prove power of shogunate- Emperor Komei is furious. Assassinated in the Sakuradamon Incident in March 1860... WANTED DICTATORSHIP BACK, daimyo out of politics, etc.
Emperor Komei
Young emperor who inspired the Meiji Restoration. He did not back the shogun's foreign policy or want Keiki as shogun (he opposed opening up). Radical-- first time shogun has spoken up in a long time.
Saigo Takamori
tries to tkae over the new meiji government and fails, this proves that meiji is superior and here to stay
