RATIFY
To officially approve a proposal.
REPUBLIC
Government in which people elect officials to represent them.
ECONOMIC DEPRESSION
A period of time when business activity slows down and unemployment increases.
CONTINENTAL CONVENTION
A 1787 meeting in Philadelphia during which the United States Congress was written.
VETO
Action by which an executive rejects a bill submitted by a legislature; to refuse to approve
COMPROMISE
An agreement in which each side agrees to give up something important.
SEPARATION OF POWERS
Limiting the powers of government bodies.
FEDERALISM
The division of power between the national government and the states.
*That's how the name Federal government came about.
ELECTORAL COLLEGE
People called electors who represent the voters in each state.
CHECKS AND BALANCES
A system of safeguards built into the Constitution to keep each branch from assuming too much authority. *This keeps each part of government from getting too greedy.
IMPEACHMENT
When the Congress takes the President to court if he/she does something wrong.
AMENDMENT
Additins and changes to the Constitution.
